Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 5, 2026
This policy explains how Eternal Swell LLC handles consumer health data collected through A Cool Journal. It sits alongside the main Privacy Policy rather than replacing it — where the two overlap, both apply.
It exists because Washington's My Health My Data Act treats a broad range of information as health data, and a journal about how your life is going contains a lot of it. A Cool Journal is not a medical service and does not diagnose or treat anything. But what you write can still reveal a great deal about your mental and physical wellbeing, and that deserves to be described plainly rather than buried.
What counts as health data here
- Your check-ins — the mood, stress, and energy ratings you record.
- Anything in your journal entries about your mental or emotional state.
- Anything you write about physical or mental symptoms.
- Your personality questionnaire answers and the resulting profile.
- Goals and challenges relating to health or wellbeing.
- Health-related content in your coach conversations.
- What the app infers from all of the above — summaries, coach memory, recurring themes, patterns, and the insights shown back to you.
That last one matters and is easy to miss: some of this health data is not written by you, it is generated by the app from what you wrote.
Where it comes from
All of it comes from you, directly, through the app — entries, coach conversations, check-ins, the onboarding questionnaire, goals, and challenges. We do not buy health data, receive it from data brokers, or collect it from other apps, your device's health store, or anywhere else on your phone.
What we use it for
- Storing your journal and showing it back to you.
- Providing the coach when you choose to use it, including the memory that lets it recall earlier sessions.
- Check-in trends, insights, goals, and challenges.
- Evaluating and improving the quality, accuracy, safety, and tone of the coach.
- Keeping the service secure and preventing abuse.
- Meeting legal obligations.
Who else processes it
The same processors listed in the Privacy Policy, in the same roles: Supabase stores it, Render runs the server it passes through, and Anthropic receives your message and relevant context in order to generate a coach reply. Authorized Eternal Swell personnel may review selected entries and coach conversations to assess how the coach is responding.
When you use the coach, health-related information in what you wrote is sent to Anthropic through its commercial API so a reply can be generated. That is the coach working as described, not a separate disclosure.
We do not sell consumer health data to advertisers, data brokers, or anyone else for their own purposes, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We have never done either and have no plans to.
Your rights
- Confirm whether we are collecting or processing your consumer health data.
- Access the consumer health data we hold about you.
- Delete it.
- Withdraw consent where our processing relies on it.
- Ask who it has been shared with, by category.
You do not have to email anyone to exercise most of this. Export journal in Settings gives you a copy of everything you have written, and Delete entry and Delete account remove it. For anything the app cannot do for you, email hello@acooljournal.com. We may need to confirm who you are before acting on a request.
Deletion
When you delete an entry or your account, the records are removed from the live database immediately, and we instruct our processors to do the same. Backup copies may persist for a short period for disaster recovery before they are overwritten or expire.
Deleting an entry also clears the coach's memory of it: the memory is rebuilt from the entries that remain, so the coach cannot keep referring to something you removed.
Security
Consumer health data is protected the same way as the rest of your journal, and the same caveats apply — including that A Cool Journal is not end-to-end encrypted, because the coach cannot remember what it cannot read. See Security in the Privacy Policy.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. If a change materially affects how health data is handled, we will say so in the app rather than quietly editing this page.
